1. How to Use Your Handpan Properly

Before you start playing:

• Wash and thoroughly dry your hands, if possible
• Wipe the surface gently using a clean microfiber cloth
• After playing, wipe it again to remove sweat and fingerprints

Sweat, dust, and skin oils contain salts that can speed up rust formation and damage the protective layer.

Handpans are built strong — but their tuning is delicate.
Avoid hitting with too much force or using sticks/mallets not intended for handpans.

• If possible, store the instrument outside the bag to prevent moisture buildup

• Clean the entire handpan — surface, rim, bottom & inside (as accessible)

This removes oils, sweat, and dirt that could lead to corrosion.

4. How to Prevent Rust & Maintain the Handpan’s Surface

• It is recommended to clean stainless steel handpans with alcohol and regularly apply oil to maintain their condition.
• The frequency of oiling may vary based on your climate. If you reside in a humid area or near the ocean, it is suggested to oil the handpan at least once a week. If you live in a dry region, oiling every 2-3 weeks is recommended.
• Use a lightweight organic oil and apply it to the surface of the handpan, ensuring its safety for instrument use. Coconut oil is a good option, and there are also specific oils available for handpans that are designed for this purpose.

5. What If Rust Appears? Don’t Panic!

First, rust or paint chipping won’t affect sound unless extremely severe.
It’s mainly a cosmetic issue.

How to treat rust:

Step 1 — Clean thoroughly with microfiber cloth + alcohol
Step 2 — Use a soft sponge scourer (green side) + tiny bit of water
Gently brush only the rusty area

⚠️ Note: Aggressive scrubbing may remove surface coating

Step 3 — Clean again with alcohol
Step 4 — Apply organic or handpan oil evenly
